Day 4

Today was Albequerque Botanical Gardens and Aquarium, Petroglyph National Monument, Petrified Forest National Park. Then a tiring drive on to Flagstaff. One of our best days yet.

Alone at last

I'm sitting in the Phoenix Inn in Salem OR all by myself. Elizabeth took the kids to see our friend Scott at his son's baseball practice. They'll come pick me up for dinner in about half an hour. Its nice to have some quiet time - extra adults come in handy. I'll try to catch up on some posts - we've had various reasons why no posts - no Internet, just plain tired, etc. So enjoy what I can get through. We're off to Seattle tomorrow via Portland and Mt. St. Helens, we'll see the Mariners tomorrow night then to San Juan Island Thursday morning.

Day 3

Went to the Oklahoma City National Memorial this morning. Its really quite a beautiful place. Since it was Sunday, the museum wasn't open in the morning, but we got to see the reflecting pool, the chairs, the gates, the Survivor Tree, etc. We then headed to Elk City and the National Route 66 Museum. We had to wait around for it to open so we had some bad fast food Mexican at the Taco Factory and then played at a playground for a while. The Museum was one of those places just filled with whatever collections they could find - Rodeo, minature sewing machines, native american arrowheads, old farm tools, Popeye stuff, army uniforms, etc., etc., etc. Stopped at the Big Texan Restaurant and Gift Shop in Amarillo. (Home of the free 72 oz. steak!) The painted the cadillacs at Cadillac Ranch. Drove on to Santa Rosa, NM. If you are ever here, skip the Silver Moon Restaurant. But the La Quinta here is much nicer than the OKC one. Tomorrow will be Albequerque and Painted Forest and Petrified Desert and on to Flagstaff. I've been posting lots of pictures to Facebook so you check out more there.

Day 2

Sorry for no post last night. We got into Memphis just as a bad storm hit and the Hewitt's house had no electricity. We eventually found a Chinese restaurant that had power and in the same shopping center was a Ben and Jerry's. So we did OK. The power was back on by morning so the boys did get to play some Wii. We visited the Memphis Zoo this morning. The kids had fun seeing the Polar Bears, lots of big cats, Sea Lions, and other things that we don't have in Atlanta. The Sea Lion show was cut short since the Zoo still didn't have power and the microphone didn't work. We then drove to Oklahoma City where we have a great La Quinta room overlooking the Walmart. Tomorrow we'll see some Route 66 stuff and then sleep in Santa Rosa, NM.

Road Trip!

We set off on our journey Friday. It will be 5 of us (with Emma's friend Anna) for the first leg of the trip from Atlanta to Sacramento. I'll try to figure out some map tool to post our route, but the basic plan is be in Memphis Friday night, OK City Sat night, Santa Rosa, NM Sun night, Flagstaff Mon night, Grand Canyon Tues night, Vegas Wed night, Bishop CA Thursday night and then on to the Frei's next Friday to meet Elizabeth who will fly into Sacramento.

So if anyone has any suggestions for things we should do or place to see, post them here.
